Our Story
For generations, Black women brewed Traditional Afrikan Beer as both a livelihood and a cultural practice. Criminalisation pushed brewing underground and marginalised its brewers. Raids forced some into unsafe compromises, leaving lasting stigma around both the beer and the knowledge behind it.
Kwela Brews partners with brewers of authentic Traditional Afrikan Beer to ensure they are recognised, credited and paid as experts. Every drop we pour comes from a named brewer, paid the same fair price wherever her beer is sold, and we help build evidence and guidelines on the beer's safety.
We are working towards fair livelihoods for brewers, recognition of Traditional Afrikan Beer as living heritage, and evidence-based policy that recognises and protects brewers, and helps keep both brewers and their customers safe.
