At Kwela Brews, we honor the legacy of Afrikan women homebrewers by blending tradition with innovation. As a social enterprise, we support homebrewers of Traditional Afrikan Beer with manufacturing, quality, and distribution resources, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their craft. Rooted in indigenous knowledge, our brews celebrate culture, community, and sustainability. Through co-creation, we’re building a thriving, inclusive beer industry—one batch at a time.
We believe that Afrikan women homebrewers are the unrecognized pillars of the Traditional Afrikan Beer industry—more than just producers, they are culture keepers, economic drivers, and community builders. Yet, despite their immense contributions, they remain invisible in policy and underserved in opportunity.
Our approach challenges outdated stigmas, confronts economic injustices, and repositions homebrewing utywala besintu as a legitimate and powerful force for community upliftment.
At Kwela Brews, our initiatives go beyond brewing—we work to uplift Afrikan women homebrewers, preserve bio-cultural heritage of utywala besintu, and expand market opportunities for Traditional Afrikan Beer. Through the Re-member project in kwaLanga, we challenge the historical neglect of homebrewers and celebrate their craft through workshops, cultural dialogues, and artistic collaborations. Our work ensures that traditional brewing remains a respected, thriving practice—rooted in history, embraced by the present, and sustained for the future.
